Do sleepers need foundations?

The most important thing is to use a surface level and firm. Perfectionists and engineers will do this on a concrete foundation, but more mortal people will often simply use gravel, hardcore, sand or soil if it is firm enough.

How do I join sleepers on top of each other?

If you are stacking the sleepers horizontally lay on the broadest side, the 21 cm width of a 21 cm x 15 cm sleeper, then just overlap the joints of the sleepers on each layer, like building a brick wall, then fasten each layer to the layer below with timber lock screws or similar.

How do you keep a sleeper in place?

Haunch the back end of the sleeper by laying it in a strip of concrete to secure the position. This will fix the sleepers to the ground so they remain stable. If using sleepers for a low border or planter it may be enough to fix a wooden post or spike behind the sleepers and fix this into the ground, this can be done using our FENCE POST ULTRA – Without point cut to size.
